The Sound of Music
July 28, 2005 – For Emay
– by Sarah Grummit
Listening to you sing
I fumble for words to describe the sounds
comparisons come, pale and weak
you are all and only your own
with shades of
Amy & Emily’s delicate harmonies
Art & Paul’s poetry
Ani’s mellow/grit
Janis’s snarling fire
old style bluesy-black woman soul
funky red hot mamma
Under the hot lights you are
Amazon stature
with lioness mane
creeping growl
caress-me voice
Stunningly true words wrap round my heart
teasing me everywhere
deep inside
You throw back your head
roaring your song out over the world
your power flies out
bouncing and shattering and nuzzling and ripping down the veil of complacency
in this city
We’re all listening, rapt
straining to hear the truth, aching to understand the meaning
You hold us all inside your mouth
Your lips, making all the magic I need tonight
the notes pulse under my skin
vibrating my nerves
I’ve lost any words I might have had
swept away by your sound
I can’t rip my eyes from you
Alone on stage, your fingers draw beauty
strum stories
pull poetry
flick fables
from twelve simple strings
You’re both demure and proud under the lights
So much, entirely, brightly, utterly
You
amaze me
I wish I’d known you forever
but tonight is a beautiful beginning
